Balblair 1975

Balblair’s 1975 – so good even distillery manager MacDonald doesn’t have a whole bottle left in his stash

Aged: 32 years, matured in Spanish oak casks

Colour: mahogany

Strength: 46.2%

Price bracket: around £175

Best for: plain wallowing in

Nose: cinnamon, Christmas pudding and ginger

Taste: a big whisky with the lightest flurry of peat smoke drifting across a sea of rich orange marmalade and full barley with a parting shot of oak in the long aftertaste

Verdict: a lot to savour, £175 exceptionally well spent
