Balblair 1997

Aged: 1997 vintage, first fill bourbon

Colour: Yellow gold

Strength: 43%

Price bracket: around £40

Best for: sploshing into a decanter before claiming it’s something far more expensive

Nose: soft and welcoming with gentle honey, floral sweetness and pineapple

Taste: quite a fire to it despite the soft flavours, it’s honeyed and tropical with a splash of citrus. Hold it in your mouth and it’ll evolve pleasingly just hinting at what may be to come were you to break the bank for Balblair’s older stock. As the fruitiness softens hints of spice, toffee and caramel appear.

Verdict: big bang for your whisky bucks
