Bruichladdich whisky | Bruichladdich X4+3

Aged: three years

Colour: light lemon yellow

Strength: 63.5%

Price bracket: around £50

Best for: hard liquor-loving maths fiends

Nose: minty compost and a hint of grappa

Taste: warm, fruity, spicy, cherries, strong burn, a hint of sour apples. Mouthfeel is numbing at its peak but then fades off… and you’re back in the room.

A bonkers whisky for the cool kids. But treat with caution, and use water. Not an everyday dram, but a knockout party piece when the time is right.

Verdict: the X4 spirit gets three years maturing to become whisky at last. The bad boy of the Bruichladdich stable comes in from the cold and will still happily blow your socks off at point blank range
