Cardhu (Johnnie Walker)

[nggallery id=23]

Type: Speyside

Known for: being home to the behemoth that is Johnnie Walker

And: a light peat touch

Bought by the Walker brothers to secure their own supply of Cardhu for their blends, the Cardhu distillery has gone hand in hand with Mr John Walker esq since 1893 and the two are just as inseparable now.

Although on drinking the Cardhu it’s hard to imagine it was a key Walker ingredient for its kick and sparkle, of which it largely has none, so perhaps they chose it as an ideal blending malt, beefing up the mix without wrecking it.

Either way, the Cardhu malt itself is rather forgettable. However, among the Walker lineup there are some great surprises. Open up a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue and you’ll be badly surprised in both the wallet and tasting areas, yet crack open a bottle of the Black and we defy you not to be beguiled. That is some blend. Of the rest, the Red is a happy mixing staple while the Gold offers more interest for those in search of pastures new while sticking with a trusty square bottle.

On that subject, these were in fact an early Walker invention allowing them to pack more into each crate for shipping. Savvy chaps indeed.

So there you have it. From the Cardhu and Walker double act you can expect everything from the bad to the bland with the brilliant in there too. Something for everyone we suppose, which is perhaps why Mr Walker is still walking after all these years.
