Type: Highland

Known for: whacking great stag’s head emblem on their bottles, punchy deep whiskies with plenty of character

And: the oldest stills in Scotland and the world’s most expensive whisky, the £100,000 Dalmore Trinitas 64-year-old

Dalmore distillery, Alness, Ross-shire, IV17 0UT. 01349 882362

You could be forgiven for writing Dalmore off as gimmick merchants given the distillery’s record for releasing headline grabbing editions, especially last year’s £100k a bottle limited edition (three bottles only) Dalmore Trinitas 64.

But look beyond these wallet-emptying miscreants and you’ll find a gorgeous distillery steeped in history that packs a cracking range of big hitting palate busters with the power to age superbly. Even at the 12-year-old stage (£99,970-odd cheaper than the Trinitas at around £30 a bottle), Dalmore is not for the faint hearted but for those who enjoy robust flavours, heady aftertastes and like to be left in no doubt they are drinking rich, powerful whisky.
