Known for: triangular bottles
And: for being the world’s biggest selling single malt
Glenfiddich Distillery, Dufftown, Banffshire AB55 4DH, 01340 820373
As the world’s biggest selling malt it’s no surprise that Glenfiddich HQ is one vast distillery. There are 24 five-metre high washbacks, 28 stills, and more warehouse space than IKEA would know what to do with. There’s even a cooperage on site for all their cask needs.
So what is a surprise is that Glenfiddich manages all this while still retaining a genuine air of honest craftsmanship. This is no factory distillery, it’s just a great one on a massive scale.
Perhaps this is because the place is still family owned. As one of the staff put it when we visited, “with no shareholders, we can afford inefficiency”, meaning they can put the production process first rather than its bottom line cost if they feel like it.
The 12-year-old’s a real classic and the whisky which kicked off the whole single malt mania in the ’60s, while the rest of the range packs a very satisfying Speyside depth that proves big production can also mean great whisky.
