Ten green bottles

A lot of whisky comes in green bottles. Partly it’s a style thing – it simply looks right – but there’s a deeper reason behind it too, and it’s all to do with marketing.

Because no matter how open-minded we like to think we are when it comes to our malts, the general consensus among consumers, uninformed or otherwise, is that older and darker is better when it comes to whisky. It’s a very deep-seated thing. So those manufacturers whose whiskies are naturally very light in colour pour them into green bottles to give an impression of darkness to the passing buyer. Simple as that.
